Senec

Senec

The actual name „Senec“, used since the first half of the 20th century, comes out of the aged names Zemch, Szempc and Wartberg. The town consists of four districts (Senec, Svätý Martin, Červený majer and Horný dvor). Senec is, above all, a well known important Slovak Summer Tourist Centrum. The Town is attractive for housing not only because of the neighbourhood of Bratislava, the Capital, but also the healthy Environment and Slnečné jazerá (Sunny Lakes). Senec had been the Capital of the District during the periods of 1949–1960 and 1996–2004. Since January 1, 2004 the District Authority has been located in Senec.

Location

Senec can be found within the Central European Region. It is situated in the South-West of Slovakia – in Podunajská nížina, on the boundary line of Podunajská rovina and Podunajská pahorkatina. The Town is 27 km far-away from the Austria boundary (frontier crossing at Kittsee), and 28 km far-away from the Hungary border (frontier crossing at Rajka). Vienna (90 km), Budapest (230 km) and Prague (350 km) are the nearest European cities. The Town is located 25 kilometres in the north-east from Bratislava, 126 m above sea level. The geographic coordinates, 17° 24´ of the eastern geographic longitude, and 48° 13´ of the northern latitude determine the geographic position of the Town Centre. The Town has good access to Highway D1, Bratislava – Žilina, and is situated on the significant European railway route Prague-Bratislava-Balkans/Orient.
